This holiday season I am looking forward to taking a break from work and spending more time with friends and family doing the things I love: sitting by the fire, cooking and sharing meals, and maybe going on an adventure or two.

Haven will be back in 2014 with bigger and better things, but for now here is a peek at my own home for the holidays.
 Merry merry!

A New Place to Shop!

Picture
A couple of weeks ago I had the awesome opportunity to help my friend Stacy (owner of the fabulous store, Dream) set up and sell at the brand new College of San Mateo Antiques & Collectibles Market. By my calculations the event had to have at least 200 if not 300 vendors and a great turn out of shoppers. There was plenty of food, music, and tons of cool stuff.

It was a great treat to spend an entire day hanging out with my best friend; helping promote our businesses was just the icing on the cake. We caught up with friends, made new contacts, sold stuff, and smelled so much kettle corn that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to eat it again.

The new market was so successful that I can’t wait for the next one. Flea markets are such an amazing source for everyone; you can find the perfect chair for your client’s living room, a cool piece of jewelry for your friend’s b-day, or that obscure record/book/cooking utensil/belt buckle you’ve been searching high and low for. Even if you don’t score an amazing find, flea markets are a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon ambling along people and stuff watching. To have one in our own backyard is like a dream come true!

I've included some pics of Stacy's lovely booth and of the market itself. It’s going to be held the third Sunday of every month from 9am-5pm but don’t dawdle; many vendors start packing up early if the crowd thins. You can find out more about the College of San Mateo Antiques Market on their website: www.sanmateoantiques.com.

See you there next time!

Making Room for the Holidays

Picture
This past weekend I had the pleasure of co-hosting interior designer Shannon Kaye’s Vintage Holiday Shopping Event. I decorated Shannon’s home for the holidays using beautiful vintage and vintage inspired pieces from our co-hosts, Dream, Willa Home, and Apartment 46.

I’m thrilled to say that the event, which was a bit of an experiment, turned out to be a great success. Shannon’s bold, vibrant color palette and eclectic furnishings made holiday decorating a bit of a challenge, but her unique style inspired me to think out of the box and decorate in a more interesting way. I used unconventional Christmas colors like pink and gold, and incorporated her existing pieces into the holiday vignettes. I also used pieces from our co-hosts that weren’t overtly holiday, such as crystal decanters and Italian gilt frames. When filled with vintage mercury glass garland or hung with a vintage ornament, these everyday items glittered with festivity. By blending holiday décor and everyday pieces, we hoped to show our guests that holiday decorating doesn’t have to be gaudy or cartoon-ish, and the treasures that we decorate with in the off-season can be part of the holiday party too.

I’m grateful to Shannon for including me in the fun, and couldn’t have done it without the lovely merchandise and support from Stacy Rhodes of Dream, AnneMarie Hogan of Willa Home, and Melisa Bleasdale of Apartment 46.

Here are a few pics from the event; check the Holiday Styling portfolio on my website to see the whole thing, and have a happy Thanksgiving!

Texas Buying Trip | Sophia Cunningham home & garden design

Postcards from Texas

Picture
Texas has never really been a place I dreamt of going. Don't get me wrong- I have nothing against Texas. I’ve probably just been ill-informed by too many stereotypical cowboy movies, leading me to imagine myself geared up in a cowboy hat, riding horses and toting a shotgun. I hate riding horses and I’ve never discharged a firearm.

However, when the opportunity arose to tag along on my best friend Stacy Rhodes’ annual Texas buying trip, I let go of my horse-riding, firearm-wielding fears and jumped at the chance. Stacy owns Dream, a shop in San Mateo that has unique vintage and French decor, garden ornaments, gifts, and  much more. She travels to Texas (among other places) twice a year to hunt for amazing treasures for the shop. If you haven't been to Dream, GO. This store is a true labor of love, offering one of a kind decor from around the world that Stacy expertly curates with her unique style and skill.

How was the buying trip? Well, Texas turned out to be hot, sweaty, and dirty, but it also turned out to be quite a dream. We made it back with plenty of bug bites, but more importantly, plenty of incredible goodies. Here are a few postcards from our trip...
